History
It is said that Hakata Niwaka, an improvised performance of traditional Japanese comedies with masks in the Hakata district in Southern Japan, started about three hundred years ago in the Edo period. At the Bon Festival night in summer, cheerful people roamed the streets with a Japanese paper lantern with eyeholes worn in the head, and made passers-by laugh with jokes and riddles. This custom was later called "Niwaka," literally meaning "suddenly" in Japanese.

After recognized by the local lord Tadayuki Kuroda, Hakata Niwaka was sophisticated and performed as a stage play. The performance usually ended with an unexpected humorous twist. As various stories were invented, a variety of masks for the performance were also created. Nowadays, Hakata Niwaka has been widely known as a folk entertainment acted in the Hakata dialect. In 1906, our founder started to sell "Niwaka Sempei" or Niwaka Sweet Crackers in the shape of a Niwaka mask, which represents the cheerful and playful characteristics of people in Hakata.

Cooking
Niwaka Sempei are cooked in molds. During this process, our skillful workers keep the same good quality and taste, even though our delicate crackers could be subject to the weather and temperatures.

Cooked crackers are wrapped carefully by the automated wrapping machine so that crackers are kept in a good quality for a long time.
　
Packaging
Wrapped crackers are encased and packaged beautifully by the automated packing machine before shipping.
